Here are your Manchester City evening headlines for Monday August 17.
Guardiola’s agent provides update on contract amid Barcelona links
Pep Guardiola has no plans to leave Manchester City this summer amid links with a move back to Barcelona.
That is according to his agent Josep Maria Orobitg who says that the former Barcelona player and manager will remain at the club for next season.
The Catalan giants currently find themselves in turmoil after a calamitous 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the quarter-final of the Champions League. There have even been suggestions of Lionel Messi leaving the club as well as reports that Guardiola could return.
However, Guardiola’s agent told Goal: “Yes, Pep will stay at City 100 per cent.”
Kompany confirms retirement as a player
City legend Vincent Kompany has confirmed his retirement from football just one year after leaving the Etihad Stadium.
The former City centre back returned to Anderlect last season as player-manager but he has spoken of his desire to fully focus on management.
He said: “I want to fully commit to my role as a coach and need 100% of my time and focus for it. That’s why I’m quitting as a football player.
"Our ambition and our hunger remains the same. I want to stay with the club for at least four seasons and prove that Anderlecht can play a modern style of football, with results. I want to thank Franky (departing co-manager Frank Vercauteren) for all his help.”
Chelsea 'to make loan move for Stones'
Chelsea are reportedly interested in making a loan move for John Stones this summer as Frank Lampard eyes defensive cover.
The England international has received minimal game time over the last 12 months at City with Eric Garcia and Aymeric Laporte emerging as the first-choice defensive pair post-lockdown.
According to the Mirror, the Blues will make a loan approach for the centre back after issues at the back last season.
While Stones has recently spoken about his desire to remain at the Etihad Stadium, the promise of more game time elsewhere could boost his hopes of a starting place at next summer’s European Championships with England.
