Man City evening headlines as Pep Guardiola pinpoints exactly why Blues lost title to Liverpool

Here are the Manchester City evening headlines on Friday, June 26.

Man City to give Liverpool guard of honour

Manchester City will almost definitely provide Liverpool with a guard of honour next week, after Jurgen Klopp’s side were crowned Premier League champions last night.

The way in which City will do it is yet to be confirmed by the club or the Premier League, but it is believed that Pep Guardiola’s team are happy to recognise the achievements of their league rivals.

Liverpool’s title win ends consecutive league triumphs for Guardiola’s side after a phenomenal two campaigns totalling 198 points from City - the two highest points totals ever recorded by a Premier League team.

Ahead of the fixture next Thursday, where City host Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium, the club will consult league officials to gauge what will be acceptable in terms of showing a gesture to Klopp’s team as they walk out on the pitch.

Guardiola outlines key reasons why City could not match Liverpool

Guardiola came up with five reasons why his side failed to match Liverpool’s performance levels this season.

The Spanish manager admitted that he knew the title chase was over months ago and so had considerable time to get to the root of how Liverpool managed to move so far clear of the chasing pack.

Liverpool’s title triumph comes as their first English title in 30 years and Guardiola conceded that City may not have had the same passion as Klopp’s squad.

“We knew it for a long time,” he said. “In general we did good things but unfortunately lost the game for some details. We have to learn, we have to be consistent like we were in the previous seasons. This season we could not maintain the same level.

“What we have done in the last two or three seasons is incredible.”
