Man City evening headlines as Leroy Sane sends parting message and Sergio Aguero injury update

Here are the Manchester City evening headlines for Friday, July 3.

Guardiola gives Aguero update

Injured Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero could be back this season, according to manager Pep Guardiola.

However, the Champions League second-leg clash with Real Madrid, which is scheduled for either August 5 or 6, may come too soon.

Aguero suffered a problem with his meniscus in the second game back after the restart and will miss the remainder of the Premier League and FA Cup campaign after undergoing surgery in Barcelona.

But he may return for the latter stages of the Champions League, should City overcome Madrid.

Guardiola said: “Unfortunately Sergio is injured so he couldn't be here.

“We will wait for him. I don't know if he will be ready for the Champions League, the second leg against Madrid it is impossible. But we have to look forward.

"We are going to wait for him, and with the players that we have we are going to do it."

Sane thanks City fans and staff in farewell post

Leroy Sane has sent a message to City supporters after he completed his transfer to Bayern Munich in a deal which could reach £54.8million.

The German international, who joined City from Schalke in the summer of 2016, wrote on Twitter : “First of all, thank you Citizens! Thanks so much for the great time and all the support over the last 4 years.

“It has been a really intense and successful time which I surely won’t forget.

“We won many games, scored a ton of goals, broke a couple of records and celebrated 7 trophies together.

“Thanks to all the fans, to the staff and to my team-mates! I will always remember this time with great joy and pride.

“Also thanks to my coach who has made me a better player and has a large share of my PFA Young Player of the Year award in 2018.

“I’ve learned a lot and I’m very proud to have been part of this journey.”

Foden may have future as a holding midfielder, says Guardiola

Phil Foden was superb in City’s 4-0 thrashing of Liverpool on Thursday night.

The 20-year-old played in the right-wing berth in which he was also named man of the match in the Carabao Cup final win over Aston Villa.

He has also looked good on the left of the front three, and was named by Guardiola as one of the reasons the club is not in the market for a replacement for the departed Leroy Sane.

But there may be a future role for Foden as a holding midfielder, according to his manager.

Guardiola said: “He's a midfield player but in time he's going to learn to play as a holding midfielder, even, because he has the ability to learn.

“But I don't want to dismiss the chance to play him close to the box because he has something special.

“We make a game in the training session and when you score four, five, six goals, this guy scores all the time two, three.

“He has a sense of goal, the mentality to be incredibly aggressive.”
