Man City evening headlines as Guardiola told to sign a striker

Here are the Manchester City evening headlines for Sunday, November 22.

Man City urged to sign a new striker

Sky Sports pundits Jamie Redknapp and Micah Richards have called on Pep Guardiola to bring in a new striker.

Manchester City have been short of attacking options this season, with both Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus missing periods with injuries.

Ferran Torres has deputised well, but the Blues have been short of goals and failed to find the net again in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Tottenham.

“I’ve got no doubt that Man City will be trying to find the next A-List superstar striker. Sergio can’t keep doing it forever,” said Redknapp.

Pep Guardiola gives assessment on the defeat to Tottenham

Former City defender Richards was in agreement, adding: “It needs to be addressed. Jesus does a good job, he doesn’t do it at the same level as Aguero.

“I think Torres has been a real revelation, I didn’t know too much about him when he came, if I’m being honest, but he’s been brilliant.”

Mourinho reveals tactics behind Spurs win over City

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has outlined how his side successfully frustrated Manchester City on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola’s visitors dominated possession and had far more shots than their opposition.

But they were punished by two swift counter attacks and could find no way through Spurs’ resilient defence.

“That's what I told the players, they didn't have time to work, but we had - myself, my assistants, the analysts. We trained on the theoretical side of the game. You can only do that when there are many principles the team has already. We define these things,” Mourinho told Sky Sports.

“If they build with four we do this way, if they build with three like they sometimes do and did in some periods of the game, we will position our block in a certain way. If they press us high we build in a way, and if they don't press high we build in a different way. Everything was very good.”

Pique injury could change City’s January transfer plans

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique sustained a cruciate ligament injury in Saturday’s defeat against Atletico Madrid, and that could have an impact on Manchester City’s January transfer window.

The Blaugrana were interested in City centre-back Eric Garcia in the summer, but failed to meet the asking price for the youngster.

But the 19-year-old informed City that he will not be extending his contract, which expires at the end of this season.

Barcelona, following Pique’s injury, could make another approach for Garcia in January, and that will leave City with a decision to make: sell for what will likely be a reduced fee, or lose the defender on a free transfer in the summer.
