Man City evening headlines as Garcia speaks out on his future

Here are your Manchester City evening headlines for Sunday August 16.

Garcia coy over City future

Eric Garcia remained guarded on his future at Manchester City after the club's exit from the Champions League on Saturday night.

Pep Guardiola's side fell to an unlikely 3-1 defeat against Lyon in Portugal which could stand as Garcia’s last game for City as he has so far refused to sign a new contract and his current deal expires in 2021.

However, the 19-year-old did not give anything away in his post-match interview with Spanish media by saying ‘we will see’ when asked about his future.

He told Movistar, cited by Goal: "The only thing I can say is that now we will have some days of rest and then we will see.

"I cannot say anything else, least of all after this elimination."

Questions that need to be asked of City and Guardiola

Pep Guardiola’s tenure in English football stands as very different to the other managerial greats to grace the Premier League.

As Stuart Brennan writes, the former Barcelona midfielder has won two league titles, three League Cups and an FA Cup during his four years in charge, and that is markedly different to reigns of Sir Alex Ferguson and Jurgen Klopp who both achieved minimal success in their first seasons at the helm of Manchester United and Liverpool respectively.

But another quarter-final defeat in the Champions League is another failure for Guardiola in his ultimate aim of delivering the one trophy that City are yet to win – and that Guardiola himself hasn’t lifted since 2011.

While the City boss has achieved remarkable things at the Etihad Stadium, questions must be asked of his approach in Europe compared to more successful exploits in the Premier League.

De Bruyne voted Premier League Player of the Season

Kevin De Bruyne has been named the Premier League’s Player of the Season following an outstanding 2019/20 campaign.

The Belgium international beat the likes of Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold to the award despite City finishing second to Liverpool in the title race.

For City’s faults last term, De Bruyne produced countless impressive performances throughout the campaign and registered a total of 20 assists which stands as a record-equalling tally for a single season alongside Thierry Henry.

Despite City dominating English football over the last 10 years, De Bruyne is only the second of the club's players to win the award after Vincent Kompany did so in 2011/12.
