Man City evening headlines as De Bruyne injury blow confirmed

Here are your evening headlines until Friday, October 16.

De Bruyne ruled out of Arsenal clash

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne will miss the Premier League clash against Arsenal tomorrow, Pep Guardiola has confirmed.

The 29-year-old suffered a muscle injury while on international duty with Belgium, coming off in his country's 2-1 UEFA Nations League defeat to England last weekend.

Guardiola has ruled De Bruyne out of the match against the Gunners and does not yet know if the injury will keep the Belgian out for a longer spell.

“Unfortunately Kevin is out, but the rest of the players come back well,” Guardiola said following the international break.

“I don’t think it’s much, but the next games and he will be out. We’ll see day-by-day.”

City have been handed a boost, however, with striker Sergio Aguero returning to training – although tomorrow’s game Arsenal at the Etihad could come too soon for the Argentine.

Guardiola expected Arsenal improvement under Arteta

Guardiola is impressed with the job his former assistant Mikel Arteta is doing at Arsenal.

Arteta left City to take over at the Gunners last December and guided the club to the FA Cup in August having overcome Guardiola's side in the semi-final.

And the City boss, who eventually replaced Arteta with Juanma Lillo, is not surprised by the improvement made at the Emirates by the Spaniard. .

“We should clarify who is the master and who is the apprentice,” he said . “None of the people who knew him had any doubts about what he is doing in a short period of time.

“He settled really well and especially the way his team is playing fight now is perfect for the quality they have.

“He was able to get Arsenal back to the position they were in a long, long time ago.”

"I want the best for English football" - Guardiola

Pep Guardiola wants the Premier League and the EFL to come together and finalise a rescue package to keep lower league sides afloat.

It emerged last weekend that Liverpool and Manchester United had formed a proposal – known as Project Big Picture – in a bid to transform the running of the English game.

But their idea was killed off on Wednesday after a meeting of all 20 Premier League clubs.

And Guardiola, who insists he is a big fan of the lower leagues, said : “I want the best for football and the best for English football.

“I don’t have an opinion, first because I didn’t listen to the hypothetical suggestions.

“What I want is the best for football. I am a big fan of local tams because I came from one of those – so League One, League Two in Spain and Catalonia.

"I honestly don’t know what exactly is the situation.”
