Man City evening headlines as club issues Walker statement and takes stand on furloughing staff

Manchester City have hit the headlines on Sunday, 5 April both on and off the pitch. Here are the day's top stories:

City issue statement on Walker

Kyle Walker has made an apology after hosting a party which breached government social guidelines.

City in turn released a statement saying the right-back would be subject to internal disciplinary proceedings and that the club was 'disappointed' in their player.

Denouncing Walker’s actions, City said his party 'directly contravened' the club’s ambitions to support the NHS and other key workers.

Hagi to City link

Rangers and Romania midfielder Ianis Hagi has caught the attention of top coaches and footballing minds around Europe, according to his agent Giovani Becali.

While Hagi moved to Glasgow in January on loan, Becali says Txiki Begiristain has called to enquire about the 21-year-old’s progress - though does not specify when the call took place, meaning it could have been before he transferred to Belgium at the beginning of the season.

The son of legend Gheorghe Hagi failed to impress at Genk after a summer move and it is expected that Rangers may make his switch permanent when the transfer window opens. City will be losing David Silva in the summer, but there is no suggestion they are looking for a direct replacement with Phil Foden lined up to take over the role.

No plans to furlough staff

While Man City and the rest of the Premier League are not currently in action, the Etihad club will not be following the lead of some others, including Tottenham and Liverpool, by furloughing any non-playing staff.

The club has written to employees, informing them that salaries will be paid as normal for the duration of the current health crisis.

A total of 463 people working for the club could have fallen under the government’s Job Retention Scheme, but City will instead continue to provide their salaries in their entirety.
