Man City duo Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva beaten to PFA Player of the Year by Liverpool FC's Virgil Van Dijk

Three Manchester City players were named among the Premier League players of the year, but missed out on the top award to Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk.

Raheem Sterling and City teammates Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero were shortlisted for the PFA Player of the Year award which was won by Van Dijk. Sterling didn't go away empty-handed though as he was named Young Player of the Year.

City Women star Georgia Stanway was named Women's Young Player of the Year while Steph Houghton won the Merit Award for her services to the game.

The awards are voted for by every Premier League player, and the top honour was won by Liverpool forward Mo Salah last season. And the main trophy remained at Anfield this season as Van Dijk was named player of the year in what is considered the most prestigious end of season award.

Sterling has been in brilliant form this season, scoring 17 goals and assisting 12 in 32 Premier League appearances. Off the field, he has taken a stand against racist abuse after an incident at Chelsea in December, and in Montenegro playing for England in March.

Bernardo, meanwhile, has stepped in for Kevin de Bruyne as the Belgian has suffered an injury hit season, and become one of Pep Guardiola's first names on the teamsheet. He has scored or assisted 15 goals in 34 appearances this season.

Aguero was also shortlisted for the award, thanks to his 20 goals and eight assists in the Premier League. The striker was one of six City players names in the PFA Team of the Year, alongside Ederson, Aymeric Laporte, Fernandinho, Bernardo and Sterling.

But with Van Dijk winning the main award, City have to wait another year to have one of their players recognised as outright player of the season. The defender has been one of the key reasons behind Liverpool's title challenge after Jurgen Klopp's men finished 25 points behind City last season.
