Man City draw Real Madrid in Champions League last 16

Manchester City will face Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League.

The Blues will head to the Spanish capital in February, and need to beat the record-breaking opposition for the first time if they are to progress to the quarter-finals.

In four meetings with the Bernabeu giants, City have drawn two and lost two, most recently in the 2016 semi-finals.

They also played Real in the 2012-13 group stage, drawing 1-21 at the Etihad Stadium and losing 3-2 in Madrid, after leading 2-1 late in the game.

The Blues qualified as group winners, which means they will play the away leg first, on a date yet to be sorted - first legs will be on February 18, 19, 25 and 26 n the returns will be on March 10, 11, 17 and 18.

City have made the last 16 of the Champions League for the last seven seasons, and the furthest they have got in the competition was the semi-finals, when they narrowly lost to Real Madrid during Manuel Pellegrini 's reign in 2016.

They came through Group C without losing a game, drawing 1-1 at home to Shakhtar Donetsk and by the same scoreline in Atalanta, but winning their other four games.

City also hope to have injured Aymeric Laporte and Leroy Sane back in their squad by the time the knockout phase starts.
