Man City defender Nathan Ake withdraws from Netherlands international squad

Nathan Ake has withdrawn from the Netherlands squad for private circumstances, they have confirmed.

The Manchester City defender had been called up for the World Cup qualifiers against Norway, Montenegro and Turkey. He was an unused substitute for both the draw against Norway and victory over Montenegro.

Ake had started City's Community Shield defeat to Leicester, giving away a last-minute penalty in the 1-0 defeat, before keeping his place for the opening Premier League loss at Tottenham.

Aymeric Laporte replaced him for the next two league fixtures, and he remained on the bench for Holland this month.

Now, the Dutch FA have confirmed he has left the squad ahead of the Turkey game for personal reasons.

In a statement, they said: "Nathan Ake and Cody Gakpo have left the training camp of the Dutch national team. Gakpo suffered an injury in Sunday's game against Montenegro. The PSV attacker is therefore not available for the World Cup qualifying match with Turkey, which is already on the agenda on Tuesday.

"Ake has, in consultation with national coach Louis van Gaal, decided to leave the training camp due to private circumstances."

Ake is the latest concern from international duty, with Zack Steffen contracting Covid-19 while with the USA and Aymeric Laporte being substituted for Spain with 'muscle fatigue'.
