Man City could face crowd challenge after giving up EFL Trophy home advantage

Manchester City Under-21s could play in front of a crowd in their next EFL Trophy game after giving up their home advantage.

Enzo Maresca's side earned a tie at the City Football Academy for the first knockout round by topping their group that included Lincoln, Scunthorpe, and Mansfield. They were drawn against League Two side Tranmere Rovers, who finished runners-up behind Port Vale.

However, the Blues have previously made a point of playing away to make the games as challenging as possible and have again given up the comforts of the Academy Stadium, opting for a trip to Prenton Park instead.

With the fixture on December 8 and the Liverpool region heading into Tier Two at the beginning of the month, there will be a crowd allowed at the match pending final sign-off by the Safety Advisory Group. A maximum of 2,000 Tranmere supporters will be able to attend, but no away fans will be permitted in line with the regulations.

The strength of City's team for the game may also be hit by Pep Guardiola's plans. The first team are at home to Marseille the following night in their last Champions League group game.

City's coach has already suggested he will rest several senior players for the remaining matches and, with the Blues already qualified and needing just a point from next week's trip to Porto to top their group, Cole Palmer, Tommy Doyle, Taylor Harwood-Bellis and others could all be used against Marseille rather than Tranmere.
