Man City confirm Ruben Dias shirt number following transfer from Benfica

New Manchester City signing Ruben Dias will wear the No.3 shirt for the club.

City have confirmed the arrival of Dias from Portuguese side Benfica and he has put pen to paper on a six-year deal at the Etihad.

The Blues have splashed out a massive £65.2million to make the 23-year-old their record signing, though £13.7million of that has been recouped with Nicolas Otamendi heading in the opposite direction in a separate deal.

Dias has been handed the number three shirt upon signing for the club, a number which has been vacated since Danilo joined Juventus in the summer of 2019. Other notable wearers of the jersey include Bacary Sagna, Wayne Bridge, Maicon and Glyn Pardoe.

“To have the opportunity to join a club like Manchester City is a fantastic opportunity for me and one I couldn’t turn down," Dias said on joining City.

“Their success speaks for itself. They have been the dominant team in England over the last few years, playing an attacking brand of football which I feel suits my own game.

“It is really exciting to be part of such a talented squad and to play for a world class manager like Pep Guardiola, who has a proven track record of developing young players like myself.

“I believe I can improve here, at a club whose ambitions match my own and I will give everything to be successful and win titles.”

The Portuguese becomes Pep Guardiola's third new addition of the summer following the earlier arrivals of Ferran Torres and Nathan Ake.

The Blues have been trying to recruit another top quality centre-back all summer and the need for one was laid bare on Sunday as they lost 5-2 to Leicester City.

Kalidou Koulibaly was the initial target but negotiations with Napoli proved difficult.  Attentions turned elsewhere last week and while Jules Kounde and Jose Gimenez were also considered, City have settled on Dias after his impressive performances for club and country in recent years.
