Man City 'confident' Sergio Aguero will stay even if Champions League ban is upheld

Manchester City are confident Sergio Aguero will stay at the Etihad despite the club's two-year ban from the Champions League.

Aguero has a year left on his contract with City, and the UEFA ban has prompted speculation the Argentine could seek a move to realise his dream of winning the Champions League.

City are taking their fight against the financial fair play ban to the Court of Arbitration for Sport - but should that fail, Aguero would be 34 by the time the club next play in Europe's top club competition.

Given Aguero's exceptional service to City and his iconic status among fans, it is understood the club would not stand in his way if he wanted to leave for another European club.

However, City are confident he will not agitate for a move, according to the Evening Standard .

The publication points to Aguero's unwavering commitment to City since arriving at the Etihad in 2011.

The only time his City future really looked in doubt was when manager Pep Guardiola brought in Gabriel Jesus and dropped Aguero from the team.

However, Aguero quickly re-established himself as City's number one striker and has produced his best form since then.

Aguero has scored 180 goals in 260 appearances for City - with his most famous strike being the last-ditch title decider that saw City crowned champions in 2012.

Since then he has helped City to a further three Premier League titles, five League Cups and an FA Cup.

Aguero has spoken of wanting to return to play for Independiente in his homeland once his career in Europe is over.

City have been banned from European competition for two years after being found guilty by UEFA of serious breaches of the governing body's financial fair play regulations.
