Man City coach Pep Guardiola responds to Phil Foden England talk

Pep Guardiola says Phil Foden has the character to be as good as he wants to be after his matchwinning performance in the Carabao Cup final.

The 19-year-old was a surprise inclusion in the Manchester City team against Aston Villa on Sunday, making his first start in seven games and in the unfamiliar position of right wing.

Gareth Southgate may not have been there to watch it but his assistant Steve Holland was, and the England coaching staff are keeping a close eye on the development of a player that has shone at youth level for the national team.

So excellent was his display on Sunday that he has leapt into the public debate over who should be picked for Euro 2020.

Guardiola has never been shy to talk Foden up, from the moment he first played for the first team in a 2017 friendly to calling him the most talented player he has seen.

The Stockport youngster is hoping to get a call-up with the national team and his club manager believes that he has both the ability and character to get whatever he wants from the game.

"I want the best for him. He will get what he deserves and of course I’m delighted about his performance and behaviour in good and bad moments," he said.

"He just works, works, works and it always pays off. At 19 you have a lot to improve but with this behaviour he can do whatever he wants.
