Man City change damns Leeds United in Premier league drubbing

Man City substitution damns Leeds

Pep Guardiola would never say that this game was over by half-time but his actions did it for him.

The Manchester City manager, who used no substitutions at Old Trafford the last time his team were so dominant, didn't even bother to send Bernardo Silva out for the second half. That's Bernardo Silva, City's best player since September who has basically played every minute in the league since then because the manager hasn't dared leave him out.

Bernardo had, funnily enough, not been at his best against Leeds while others stepped up to shine and wasn't feeling comfortable either - but he would have continued if there had anything still riding on the contest.

Fernandinho then appeared inside 10 minutes of the second half for Rodri, another to have been heavily used this season.

Ruben Dias attempting a scooped assist for Phil Foden went close to the most telling indicator that City were toying with their opponents, but the half-time change topped it.

More records for City

There were a number of milestones hit by City against Leeds.

Phil Foden's opening goal was the 500th Premier League goal scored under Guardiola's tenure, and in just 207 games. That's the quickest a manager has achieved that in the competition, beating Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

The win moves the Blues to 33 in the league for the calendar year, matching Liverpool's record from 1982; three points against any one of Newcastle, Leicester, or Brentford will set another record.

And - arguably most importantly - the team have now hit the 40-point marker in the league. Without wishing to tempt fate, City have given themselves a really good chance of staying up this season.

Zinchenko hits his stride

Last season it took Aleks Zinchenko until the final match - the Champions League final, no less - for him to start three matches in a row in all competitions.

This time, he has done it before Christmas. A start at RB Leipzig with Joao Cancelo rested was followed by a start against Wolves with Kyle Walker benched and, with neither full-back available against Leeds, the Ukrainian resumed his duties.

Some may have feared for their place given a lack of minutes in the opening months and there have been reports of more interest from Premier League clubs for the January window, yet Zinchenko is up and running at City again - and earlier than ever.

Crowd respond to Guardiola

Guardiola wanted a full house making noise against a Leeds team he was worried about, and he certainly got it.

Helped by the performance, the supporters cycled through their full catalogue of songs and enjoyed taunting the Leeds supporters who had made the short trip to watch their team get battered.

Here's hoping the country is in a good enough state that there's another good crowd allowed in for the Leicester game on Boxing Day.
