Man City Champions League group stage opponents confirmed

Manchester City will face Shkahtar Donetsk, Dinamo Zagreb and Atalanta in the Champions League group stages.

City have very public ambitions of winning this season's competition after exits at the quarter final stage for two years in a row. Navigating the group stage has not proved to be an issue in recent years, and Pep Guardiola will be hoping for a similar run of results this season.

As top seeds, City avoided Champions League winners Liverpool, Europa League winners Chelsea, and the likes of Barcelona, PSG and Juventus, who all won their respective leagues last season.

It is the third consecutive season that City face Shakhtar in the group stage, with another long trip to Ukraine on the cards.

Zagreb comfortably won the Croatian league last season with 92 points, and overcame Ferencvaros, and Rosenborg in the qualifying rounds.

Atalanta produced a fine season to finish third in Serie A, qualifying directly for the Champions League group stage.

Dates for the fixtures are set to be announced in due course, with gameweeks taking place on September 17-18, October 1-2, October 22-23, November 4-5, November 26-27 and December 10-11.

City are paired with Liverpool in the draw, meaning they will play on different nights to their Premier League rivals.
