Man City Champions League draw: Pep Guardiola's side to face Premier League rivals Spurs in quarter-finals

Manchester City will face Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Pep Guardiola’s side will be looking to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League for just the second time in their history, having made the 2015/16 last-four when they came unstuck against Real Madrid in an aggregate 1-0 defeat.

But even before the draw, City have been made the bookmakers’ favourites to go all the way and complete their long-term quest to conquer Europe.

The current Premier League leaders are still fighting for the quadruple, having already secured the League Cup last months, and it now appears that Spurs will have a major say in whether Guardiola’s side go on an re-write history given how often they will meet in the next month.

As well as the two Champions League meetings, the sides clash again in the Premier League on Saturday 20 April, meaning they will play each other three times in the space of 10 days.

The two Premier League clubs watched on as both Ajax and Juventus were drawn out in the first tie of the last eight, ensuring that there would be at least one all-Premier League tie due to the presence of four English clubs in the quarter-finals.

And while Liverpool and Manchester United avoided each other in the remainder of the draw, it was Spurs and Manchester City who were placed together to renew their domestic rivalry next month.

The first leg will be played on Tuesday 9 April and Spurs hope to be in place to stage the match at their new stadium in north London, although Wembley Stadium remains on standby should any further delays arise.

The return leg at the Etihad Stadium will then take place on Wednesday 17 April.

Whoever emerges from the tie victorious will then face either Ajax or Juventus in the semi-finals, hosting the first leg before travelling abroad for the second leg, and it means that neither Spurs nor City can face United, Liverpool, Barcelona or Porto until the final.
