Man City can give Mauricio Pochettino early transfer boost in Man Utd job

If Manchester United end up appointing Mauricio Pochettino as their next permanent manager, they could be handed a boost in their pursuit of the former Tottenham man's main transfer target.

Paris Saint-Germain manager Pochettino is one of a number of contenders to take over at Old Trafford when Ralf Rangnick's temporary tenure comes to an end, with Erik ten Hag and Luis Enrique also thought to be on the shortlist.

Harry Kane has been tipped to follow Pochettino to Old Trafford if the appointment is made, having thrived under the Argentine when the pair were together in London.

The Spurs striker's summer links with Manchester City had prompted suggestions Pep Guardiola could return for the England captain, but City's pursuit of Erling Haaland could give their neighbours a free run at Kane.

According to Bild (via Sport Witness ), United have overtaken City as the front-runners for Kane thanks to City's pursuit of Haaland.

The Norway striker has been tipped to leave Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season, with United's interest in the 21-year-old having died down, and City are expected to do battle with some of Europe's other superclubs for a player who Bild claim is high on their list.

City have already added Argentina forward Julian Alvarez to their ranks this year, with the youngster returning to former club River Plate on loan, but this is not expected to stand in the way of them bringing in further attacking reinforcements.

United's appointment of Pochettino is not set in stone, but Bild suggest the former Spurs boss is "expected" to replace Rangnick at the end of the campaign.

The interim boss, who took charge of his first game in December after replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, is himself expected to move into a consultancy role at the end of the current season.

While a reunion with Pochettino continues to be talked up, with Bild adding that he and Kane supposedly "want to continue" a partnership which took Spurs to the Champions League final in 2019, United's precarious top-four hopes may leave some wondering whether failure to qualify for next season's Champions League might scupper the chances of Kane moving north.

Rangnick's side currently occupy fourth place in the Premier League, but Arsenal - who currently sit two points and two places below the Red Devils - have three games in hand.

Kane, who has 24 goals for club and country this season, is under contract with Tottenham until the summer of 2024.

His double in a win at Manchester City helped keep Spurs' own top-four hopes alive, and he was on target again as the London club put four past Leeds United at Elland Road.
