Man City boss Pep Guardiola says new handball law is 'quite ridiculous'

Pep Guardiola has waded into the handball debate by claiming the current law is "quite ridiculous".

The decision by football's lawmaking body Ifab to penalise any handball, if the arm is away from the body, has caused a storm of controversy.

The decision to award a penalty to Newcastle when Andy Carroll's header ricocheted off the arm of Tottenham defender Eric Dier brought widespread condemnation.

And with Brighton's Neal Maupay being similarly penalised in a incident against Manchester United, the noise for some action to be taken has grown.

Manchester City boss Guardiola was asked about the matter in his press conference prior to the Leeds game and said: "Football is an unpredictable game - the hand from Dier, the one against United, against Arsenal."

And he suggested that the game needs to re-boot, and go back to the original law, in which the referee is given the decision as to whether a handball was intentional or not.

"Everyone knows if there’s an intentional hand," he said. "One guy jumping in the box to make a deflection and it can go to the hand - you get a penalty, that is quite ridiculous.

"But hopefully the referees and managers can decide the best for the game, to be most fair."

One report claims that the Premier League is already looking at how they could "soften" the rule to give referees more leeway in their decisions.

That would include taking into account the closeness of the offending player to the shot or header, and more commonsense to be applied in determining whether an arm is in an "unnatural position".
