Man City boss Pep Guardiola's glowing Swansea City assessment as Arsenal legend angers Swans fans

Swansea City bowed out of the FA Cup as they were comfortably beaten 3-1 by Man City.

Here are the main talking points from the fifth round encounter at the Liberty Stadium.

Guardiola's glowing Swansea assessment

In beating Steve Cooper's side, Man City stretched their winning run to 15 matches.

It meant Pep Guardiola's troops are now record breakers as they set a new English club record for the most consecutive victories, surpassing the number of 14 wins chalked up by Preston (from 1892) and Arsenal (ending in 1987).

At the same time, Man City ended Swansea's 10-match unbeaten run while becoming the first away side to emerge victorious at the Liberty Stadium since Huddersfield Town won 2-1 against the Swans in October.

And Guardiola admits he was hugely pleased with his side's performance against a "strong" Swansea side.

“I’m very pleased for the way they performed,” he said.

“All of them. Swansea is a strong side. They are a really strong team. You understand how many games they were unbeaten. We are in the next round. We are very pleased.

"The game takes more than 90 minutes. I would love to win after eight minutes.

“That’s why you have to be patient, control the strength points. In general we played a really good game.”

The Jordan Morris experiment

Andre Ayew was handed a well earned rest which allowed Jordan Morris to make his first start for Swansea.

Morris could not have asked for tougher opponents to face on what was a significant landmark for the American in the context of his loan spell.

However, despite Man City's domination of the ball, Morris offered an outlet with his pace in behind the visitors' defence while he was involved in Swansea's rare moments of attacking play in the first half.

Ultimately, the Jack Army were never going to see the best of the 26-year-old in this fixture, although it will no doubt benefit the attacker to have had 65 minutes of action ahead of Swansea's remaining 19 league fixtures.

"Difficult night for all of the boys in terms of the in possession play," admitted Cooper.

"But it was important for him to start and for him to get minutes. He had flashes of what he can do.

"We're not disappointed with him, that's for sure. He's only going to grow and improve.

"The two substitute appearances he's made for us, he's looked a handful, and there were one or two signs of that again tonight, so I'm sure he's going to contribute in a positive way going forward."

Morgan's magic moment

Morgan Whittaker made the scoreline more respectable for Swansea with a coolly taken goal late on.

The January signing had only been on the pitch for 12 minutes before he expertly controlled Ryan Manning's cross before firing beyond Zack Steffen to make it 3-1.

It was no doubt a huge moment for the 20-year-old forward whose opportunities to shine will be few and far between in the remaining weeks of the 2020/21 Championship campaign.

But in front of the TV cameras and against such stellar opposition, Whittaker wasted no time in putting his case forward to be given more minutes in the latter stages of the league season.

"Hopefully he's pleased. He should be," said Cooper when discussing the 20-year-old's goal.

"We're really pleased for him. He's only been through the door for two minutes but we've already seen in training he's got a goal in him.

"So when it fell to him, we half backed him to score, particularly on his left foot, and he didn't disappoint us."

The perspective needed

Martin Keown did little to endear himself to the Swansea faithful during his commentary of the game on BT Sport.

The Arsenal legend irked some supporters after claiming Cooper was set to bring some of his regulars on to the pitch midway through the second half, with three of those "regulars" being Paul Arriola, Whittaker and Kieron Freeman - who were all making their club debuts.

And after Keown seemingly failed to fully grasp the gulf between the two sides, former Wales international Iwan Roberts took to Twitter to fight Swansea's cause.

"Ffs Martin, the gulf is one starting 11 has cost over £332m the other one just under £2m!" he said.

Swansea were always going to be under the cosh against a rampant Man City side, and their coaching staff were under no illusions as to how difficult a task it was set to be.

And while the Swans were outclassed for the duration, a large dose of perspective - something most people were fully aware of anyway - is certainly needed.

Cooper's men remain in a strong position in the Championship with 19 matches left to play, and their campaign certainly won't suffer as a result of a cup defeat to a side that have just broken an English club record for consecutive wins.
