Man City boss Pep Guardiola makes Thomas Tuchel prediction after Chelsea appointment

Pep Guardiola has backed Thomas Tuchel to gain success at Chelsea.

The German has been appointed head coach at Stamford Bridge following Frank Lampard's sacking earlier this week.

He is a manager that Man City boss Guardiola knows well, with the two having faced each other in Germany on a number of occasions.

In 2015/16, Guardiola led Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga title as they finished 10 points clear of Tuchel's Borussia Dortmund, who finished second.

Guardiola remembers Tuchel's Dortmund side as being fiercely competitive and expects the 47-year-old to reproduce this at Chelsea.

He said after Tuesday's win over West Brom: "He's an exceptional manager so I'm pretty sure he'll have success.

"I'm happy to see him here in this country.

"When I was at Bayern Munich, I played against him at Mainz and then at Dortmund.

"He did an incredible job, the way Dortmund played that season was outstanding.

"We fought a lot at Bayern Munich to win that title.

"He's a friend of mine and I'm happy to see him."

Tuchel lasted two seasons at Dortmund before being sacked after a public fall-out with the German club's hierarchy.

He subsequently moved to PSG in 2018, twice winning Ligue 1 but failing to achieve the European success coveted by the French side.

After speaking out publically about his fractured relationship with PSG's top brass, he was fired in December last year but has now quickly moved back into management.

Chelsea currently sit 10th in the table, 12 points off leaders Man City and six points off a top-four spot.

Yet, with plenty of teams above the Blues having games in hand, Tuchel needs to hit the ground running in order to make sure the season does not peter out at Stamford Bridge.
