Man City boss Pep Guardiola explains why Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk shouldn't be Player of the Year

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola believes Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk and his own winger Raheem Sterling should NOT have claimed individual awards this season.

Van Dijk became the first defender since John Terry in 2005 to be named PFA Player of the Year last month when he succeeded Reds team-mate Mohamed Salah.

The Dutchman, though, was beaten into second place to the award for FWA Footballer of the Year by City rival Sterling, who also scooped the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

Man City boss Pep Guardiola makes Liverpool declaration - and fears being 'destroyed'

However, Guardiola believes both players should have missed out on each award by City's Bernando Silva, who made the PFA shortlist for both the Player and Young Player of the Year awards.

"He was the best and not just in our team - but I don't vote," said the City boss.

"He can play incredibly well everywhere, give me a team and he can play well there. He does everything good.

"Any team in the world he could play - by far."
