Man City boss Pep Guardiola congratulates Liverpool on Premier League glory

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has congratulated Liverpool for their Premier League success, after the title was clinched on Thursday evening.

City's defeat at Chelsea ensured Liverpool, following a 30-year wait that was extended further by the coronavirus crisis, were left celebrating their victory.

Guardiola's side have been Liverpool's closest competitors this season, albeit still a significant way behind, and the City boss issued congratulations after the game.

"A big congratulations for Liverpool, for this great season, for the title they won," he told BT Sport.

Guardiola was then asked what the focus is for City ahead of next season, while also providing insight on why his side couldn't make it three titles in a row.

He said: "We have five weeks, six weeks and time to think about it. What this club has done in the last decade is fighting for the titles, we won a lot in the last years, and we're going to try to be close.

"Two seasons ago, we won 25 points in front of Liverpool, so after two seasons, they have more than 20 right now, the gap is big and we have to close it.

"We are not consistent like previous seasons. We arrived after four titles in one season, Liverpool after winning the Champions League, it gives them confidence and the fact it's 30 years since they won the league, it was incredible focus in the players.

"When they take advantage, it causes pressure for the run. We cannot forget we are still second in the league, so we're still better than a lot of teams, and we're going to finish fighting for the Champions League."
