Man City battle Liverpool FC for 'next Kevin De Bruyne' as new Serie A striker target emerges

Welcome to the latest edition of the City Is Ours daily digest, your dose of Manchester City news you might have missed.

Despite reports swirling around that City are interested in Erling Haaland and Dusan Vlahovic, it appears that another young forward is on their radar.

Speaking of young players, City have been monitoring a midfielder touted as being better than Jude Bellingham.

City monitor Milan star

Haaland and Vlahovic are the favourites in terms of strikers City are expected to sign, but AC Milan's Rafael Leao has emerged as a surprise candidate.

According to Sky Italia (reported via SportsMole), City have been monitoring the 22-year-old forward for some time and, thanks to his performances this season, their interest is growing.

The Italian giants are hoping to tie Leao down to a new contract - his current deal expires in 2024 - but if they fail to do so then City will be waiting to swoop in.

The Portuguese international, who joined the Rossoneri from Lille in 2019, is on course for his best season yet at the San Siro having scored five goals and provided three assists in 19 games.

Our take

Leao would be an intriguing signing for City, as he possesses the positional flexibility that Pep Guardiola likes his attackers to have. However, apart from playing as a centre-forward, Leao also plays on the left wing - a position where City already have plenty of options.

It's hard to imagine that City would prioritise Leao over Haaland or Vlahovic.

Another midfield sensation?

City already have a wealth on midfield talent, but it's never too early to start planning for the future.

According to TVP Sport City have watched 18-year-old Polish midfielder Kacper Kozlowski on "several occasions", and are prepared to pay at least €10m for the youngster.

Kozlowski, who plays for Pogon Szczecin, has attracted the interests of clubs around Europe having made six senior appearances for his country this year.

One potential suitor for the man labelled the 'next Kevin De Bruyne' is Liverpool. When the interest of City's title rivals was put to Polish football legend Zbigniew Boniek, he claimed that Kozlowski played "beyond" the likes of Jude Bellingham in a youth tournament a few years ago.

Our take

City arguably have the best midfield in the world, but sooner or later they'll have to start planning for the future. Fernandinho looks past his best, Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan aren't getting any younger and doubts remain over the future of Bernardo Silva.

As a versatile 18-year-old midfielder, Kozlowski would give Guardiola a lot to work with.

Meeting Ferran halfway

Barcelona's interest in Ferran Torres has been widely reported recently but, according to one report, there has been some progress on a potential deal.

Mundo Deportivo have reported that City would be willing to accept an offer of £38m for their young striker, even though they value him at £51m.

The Barcelona based newspaper says that Ferran and Barcelona have an agreement on personal terms in place, so it is just down to the clubs to get a deal done.

Our take

The obvious hurdle in this Ferran business is Barca's lack of funds. Their financial situation has been well documented and ,as club president Joan Laporta admitted recently, they are not currently in a position to make any new signings in January.

However, should they engineer a sale or two and City are flexible in their asking price, then there is no reason why a deal won't happen.

City will not keep Ferran at the club against his will, so will do their best to facilitate a deal if his heart is set on the Camp Nou.
