Man City duo Raheem Sterling and Nikita Parris win FWA Footballer of the Year awards

Raheem Sterling has won the 2019 Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year award after his impressive performances for Manchester City this season.

The City attacker has scored 17 goals and provided 12 assists in the Premier League this season and has been an integral part of Pep Guardiola's side as they push to retain the Premier League title.

The England international missed out on the PFA Players' Player of the Year to Virgil Van Dijk on Sunday evening but was a clear winner in the vote by the media.

Sterling received 62 per cent of the votes of over 400 FWA members beating second place Van Dijk by over 100 votes.

City striker Sergio Aguero came in third.

Sterling became the first City player to win the award, which was first handed out in 1948, for 50 years after defender Tony Brook shared the accolade with Derby's Dave Mackay in 1969.

Other players to receive votes from FWA members were Harry Kane, Eden Hazard, Alexandre Lacazette, Bernardo Silva and David Silva.

The 24-year-old wasn't the only City player to win in the awards as City Women's forward Nikita Parris was named Women's Footballer of the Year.

Parris beat Arsenal's Vivianne Miedema, who won the PFA award on Sunday, by just one vote with City captain Steph Houghton coming in third.

The awards will be handed out at a ceremony in London on May 9.
