Man City announcement causes Sergio Aguero shirt sales to boom

Manchester City's decision to let Sergio Aguero leave at the end of the season left supporters hurrying to buy shirts with the striker's name on.

Pep Guardiola had said that contract decisions would be left until the end of the campaign but after thinking about it during the international break the club record scorer was told in a meeting with the manager last Monday in order to give him more time to sort out his next move.

If the news was not unexpected given Aguero's struggles with injuries over the past year, it was still a shock that the Blues will be kicking off next year without the man who has given them so many memories and helped win so many trophies over the past ten years.

As teammates rushed to send their own tributes to the Argentine, supporters were marking the announcement in another way; sales of City shirts with Aguero printed on the back lack week shot up by over 1,200 per cent week-on-week as fans moved to give themselves more reminders of the striker.

Guardiola and Aguero hope the 32-year-old will still have a say in City's quest for an unprecedented Quadruple this season. He started the Premier League game at Leicester on Saturday following the announcement of his impending departure, but was an unused substitute for the Champions League game with Dortmund in midweek.

City have seven league matches remaining, as well as FA Cup, Champions League and Carabao Cup fixtures already in their diaries.
