Man City agree £15m transfer deal with Aston Villa for Douglas Luiz

Manchester City will make a profit on Douglas Luiz after agreeing a £15m deal with Aston Villa for the midfielder.

City paid £10.7m to sign the Brazilian from Vasco da Gama in 2017 , and after a season a sister club Girona there were high hopes the Blues could use him as backup to Fernandinho - especially after a move to sign Napoli midfielder Jorginho fell through.

However, despite interventions from Pep Guardiola and Brazil coach Tite the Blues were unable to get a work permit for Douglas after the pre-season tour and had no option but to send him back to Girona.

With City facing the same scenario this summer, another loan or a permanent sale was the most likely option and Premier League newcomers Aston Villa have agreed a £15m fee - with a buyback also included. Angelino has recently re-signed for the Blues after a clause was inserted into his PSV contract.

Luiz will become the second permanent departure of the week and the summer at the Etihad after defender Pablo Mari completed a move to Flamengo on Thursday. Both will depart having never made a first-team appearance for the club.

City broke their record transfer fee to bring in Rodri from Atletico Madrid because they believe the 23-year-old has the ability and potential to become the long-term successor to Fernandinho. The fact they were keen to put a buyback clause into the Luiz deal indicates they will still be monitoring his process keenly.
