Man City 7 Schalke 0 (10-2 agg.): City cruise into Champions League quarter-finals

Manchester City made light work of Schalke as Pep Guardiola's side eased into the Champions League quarter-finals with a 7-0 rout at Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night to progress 10-2 on aggregate.

Man City suffered a first-leg scare as they needed two late goals to seal a 3-2 away win in Gelsenkirchen, but the tie was never in doubt once City found the opening they were looking for when Bernardo Silva was fouled by in the penalty area by Jeffrey Bruma just after the half hour.

After the referee checked with VAR, Sergio Aguero chipped the spot-kick home after goalkeeper Ralf Faehrmann had committed himself to dive to his left, stretching City's lead to 4-2 on aggregate.

City made it 2-0 on the night shortly after when a through ball from Ilkay Gundogan set Raheem Sterling away down the right.

His backheel into the path of Aguero almost caught the City striker out but he managed to dig the ball out from under his feet before shooting through the keeper's legs from a tight angle.

After a lengthy VAR review, Aguero's goal was declared legal and City were 5-2 ahead on aggregate.

Leroy Sane made it 3-0 just before half-time when he shot across the keeper to put City 6-2 ahead over the two legs.

Sane received the ball on the left side of the area and he carried it forward before netting against his old club.

Sterling made it 4-0 to City after 56 minutes with a skilful finish when he was set up by Sane's ball from the left.

The goal was awarded after another VAR review, correctly overturning an offside flag against Sterling, to make it 7-2 over the two legs.

Bernardo Silva made it 5-0 and 8-2 on aggregate with 19 minutes remaining. The midfielder finished off a flowing move when his shot went in off the post.

City were not done there though, as Phil Foden scored his first Champions League goal off the bench after another Sane assist before Gabriel Jesus sent the aggregate scoreline into double figures.
