Man City 1-2 Man Utd player ratings as Fred leads the way in Manchester derby

Manchester United dealt a hammer blow to Manchester City's title hopes with a 2-1 victory at the Etihad.

City went into the Manchester derby 14 points adrift of league leaders Liverpool following their win at Bournemouth earlier in the day.

But they were outdone by two goals in quick succession at the end of the first hal in an excellent United performance.

Marcus Rashford opened the scoring from the penalty spot after he was fouled by Bernardo Silva.

Anthony Martial then added a second before City were denied a penalty of their own following a handball from Fred.

City dominated possession after the break and gave themselves hope through Nicolas Otamendi but couldn't find a leveller.

Here are David McDonnell's player ratings from the Etihad.

Man City

Ederson 7

Kept United out for as long as he could with three early saves but defence ultimately let him down.

Walker 5

Did well to get back and dispossess Martial early on, but that was about it. Lacked assurance.

Stones 5

Poor positionally and off the pace from the start. Injured and replaced just before the hour.

Fernandinho 5

Struggled to cope with the pace and movement of United's counter-attacks.

Angelino 3

Woeful. Given the runaround by James. Simply couldn't handle his pace and direct running.

Rodri 6

Turned by Martial in the build-up to United's second goal. Didn't put enough pressure on him.

De Bruyne 7

Played some fine defence-splitting passes and crosses, but to no avail. Sent free-kick over bar.

D Silva 6

Sent tame free-kick straight at De Gea. Tried his usual probing but lacked usual spark and flair.

B Silva 5

Conceded a penalty with clumsy and needless challenge on Rashford. Lacked cutting edge.

Jesus 5

Sent a diving header wide before half-time from a superb De Bruyne cross. Should have scored

Sterling 5

Shackled by Wan-Bissaka, his goal drought against United – now 17 games – goes on.

Subs:

Otamendi 7 (Stones, 59)

Mahrez 6 (Bernardo, 65)

Gundogan (Rodri, 85)

Man Utd

De Gea 8

Little to do early on, but saved well from Rodri and then Mahrez late on. Booked for time-wasting.

Wan-Bissaka 8

Outstanding. Blocked De Bruyne effort early on. Nullified threat of Sterling down his flank.

Maguire 8

Captain led by example. Showed great awareness and anticipation, won everything in the air.

Lindelof 8

Fine last-ditch block to divert goal-bound De Bruyne shot and made other key interceptions.

Shaw 7

First Premier League start since August but didn't show. Solid and lasted until the 88 minute.

Fred 9 MOTM

Belligerent and industrious presence in midfield. Won the ball in the build-up to the opener.

McTominay 8

Diligent and disciplined in midfield. No coincidence his return has sparked United's revival.

James 8

Forced save from Ederson after two minutes. Provided assist for Martial for United's second.

Lingard 7

Denied by Ederson, when he should have shot earlier. Clever movement and running off the ball.

Rashford 8

Won and converted penalty, missed a sitter and then hit the bar. Caused City problems throughout.

Martial 7

Angled effort blocked by Ederson early on but beat him with low effort in off the post. Subbed.

Subs

Pereira 5 (Martial, 73)

Young (Shaw, 88)

Tuanzebe (Lingard, 88)
