Man choked to death day before inquest found his brother died the exact same way

A man choked on a piece of meat the day before an inquest heard his brother died the exact same way.

The hearing into the death of Gwyn Francis heard he suffered a hypoxic brain injury after choking on steak and chips while out for a meal.

The 62-year-old had been out for dinner at Mill Tavern in Flint when he started choking on January 29.

Paramedics managed to remove a small piece of meat from his throat, but when it became clear that his airway was still blocked they performed a tracheotomy .

At the hearing on Wednesday, July 3 John Gittins, senior coroner for North Wales East and Central, recorded a conclusion of accidental death

Gwyn Francis was a carer for his brother Selwyn, who had suffered several strokes in the past.

The second inquest was opened at Ruthin County Hall (North Wales Live WS)

Another brother told the inquest that 18 months previously Selwyn had also choked on a piece of steak at the same venue but the obstruction had been cleared by someone performing the Heimlich manoeuvre.

On Monday, however, an inquest was opened at Ruthin on Selwyn Francis, also of Flint, who had choked on food at another unnamed restaurant in the Flint area on Tuesday July 2, the day before Gwyn's inquest.

He was taken to the Countess of Chester Hospital but died on Thursday, July 4.

Assistant coroner Elizabeth Dudley-Jones said the provisional cause of death had again been given as hypoxic brain injury following a cardiac arrest.

Since his brother's death Selwyn, 68, a retired process worker, had been living at the Gillibrand Nursing Home in Chorley.

The inquest into Selwyn Francis' death was adjourned to a date still to be fixed.
