Man charged with the murder of Ballarat woman Kobie Parfitt

Kobie Parfitt had been estranged from her family for a number of years.

A man has been charged with murdering Ballarat woman Kobie Parfitt, who was last seen alive on April 28.

Police investigating Ms Parfitt's disappearance last week found human remains in a mine shaft at Snake Valley, south-west of Ballarat, but they are yet to be formally identified.

Last night, with assistance from the Victoria Police's Critical Incident Response Team, officers arrested 31-year-old Wendouree man Brendan Prestage in Kinglake.

Mr Prestage has been charged with one count of murder.

At a hearing before Magistrate Kimberley Swadesir this afternoon, Mr Prestage was remanded in custody to appear for a committal mention in Ballarat on May 5.

Police have also spoken to a 31-year-old woman from Mount Clear, but she was released without charge.

Last month, police stated that they believed the 43-year-old mother-of-four had been murdered, and that there were people in Ballarat who know what happened to her.

Police said Ms Parfitt had a "challenging life" and had been estranged from her family for a number of years.

Anyone who has any information about Ms Parfitt's disappearance has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
