A man is facing charges after allegedly stealing an ambulance and leading police on a chase early Thursday in suburban Joliet.

Henry McCall, 58, is charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle, aggravated fleeing and eluding, obstructing a peace officer and driving with a suspended license, Joliet police said in a statement.

McCall allegedly stole a Wilmington Fire Department ambulance about 12:45 a.m. from St. Joseph Medical Center, police said. Officers spotted the ambulance as it traveled west on Jefferson Street at Barney Drive and tried to stop it, but McCall allegedly refused to pull over.

Officers pursued the ambulance to the area of Jefferson and Northeast Frontage Road, where McCall crashed into another vehicle and lost control of the ambulance, police said.

The ambulance rolled over a guardrail and crashed into a ditch near Interstate 55, police said. McCall ran from the ambulance but was taken into custody.

McCall and the driver of the vehicle he crashed into were taken to St. Joseph Medical Center with minor injuries, police said.

McCall was taken to the Will County Jail after being released from the hospital.
