Man charged with stabbing police officer in the back at Sydney train station

Mark Thompson was carried out of Central Station by police officers after the alleged stabbing incident.

A 53-year-old man has been charged with stabbing a police officer in the back at Sydney's central station.

Police allege Mark Thompson stabbed Constable Hayden Edwards with a 45cm hunting knife about 7:00pm on Friday during an "unprovoked attack" on one of the station's platforms.

Mr Thompson is also alleged to have threatened three other officers with the knife before being tasered and arrested.

He has been charged with four offences, including wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and resisting arrest.

Constable Edwards, 30, was in a stable condition on Saturday afternoon after undergoing surgery. He has been discharged and is recovering at home.
