A MAN accused of sexually abusing a five-year-old girl while staying with her family at Port Stephens will face court on Tuesday.

Specialist police from the State Crime Command's Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad began investigating in June after reports a child was abused by a man she knew.

With assistance from Brisbane Water police, detectives on Sunday morning arrested a 44-year-old man at a Narara home on the Central Coast.

He was taken to Gosford police station and charged with two counts of intentionally sexually touch child under 10 years.

Police said they will allege the man sexually abused the five-year-old in April while staying with her family.

The 44-year-old received strict conditional bail to face court in Raymond Terrace.
