A man has been charged with murdering a 21-month-old girl more than 12 years after she died in a Sydney hospital.
The 38-year-old man was arrested at Silverwater jail about 9am on Tuesday and is due to face Campbelltown Local Court via videolink.
Police are alleging the toddler died from "non-accidental trauma" to the head, injuries she sustained while in the sole care of the man accused of her murder.
A number of inquiries have been conducted into her death and a 2013 coronial inquest found she likely died of blunt force head injury, police say.
The coronial inquest did not result in charges at the time.
The toddler was reported unresponsive after suspected head injuries at an Ingleburn medical centre on September 25, 2009.
She was flown to the children's hospital at Westmead in a critical condition, where she died five days later.
Strike Force Wudgong was established in August last year to further investigate the toddler's death, leading to the arrest.
