A man has been charged with the attempted murder of a five-month-old girl in NSW last year.

The girl was suffering critical injuries when taken to a local hospital in the state's Hunter region on Saturday, December 12.

She was later transferred to John Hunter Hospital for ongoing treatment.

The State Crime Command's Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad commenced an investigation when the girl was hospitalised.

The 26-year-old man, who is known to the girl, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with attempted murder.

He was formally refused bail in Cessnock Local Court and is due back in that court on April 14.
