Man charged with murdering his mother after she dies in flat fire in north London

A man has been charged with murdering his mother after she died following a flat fire in north London.

Beatrice Yankson, 59, was pronounced dead at the scene of the blaze in Holloway, Islington, in October.

Her son Joel Ellis, 35, was later arrested and on Tuesday night he was charged with murdering her.

He also faces a charge of arson with intent to endanger life.

Police were called to reports of a fire at a flat in Mingard Walk shortly after 12.40pm on October 26.

Ms Yankson was pronounced dead at the scene.

“A post-mortem examination established her cause of death to be burns and inhalation of fire/fumes,” Scotland Yard said in statement.

Ellis, of Kingard Walk in Holloway, was later arrested and charged.

He will appear in custody at Thames Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.
