Tributes have been paid to a “dedicated” Polish student who was stabbed to death in an alleyway as a man is to appear in court charged with her murder.

Ania Jedrkowiak, 21, was found with multiple knife injuries off Church Gardens, South Ealing shortly after midnight on Tuesday. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The University of West London in Ealing released a statement saying they were supporting students and would pass on a book of condolences to the family of Ms Jedrkowiak who “touched the hearts of many”.

They wrote: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Ania Jedrkowiak, a student and strong member of the UWL community.

“Our thoughts are with Ania’s family, friends and anybody who had the pleasure of knowing her.

“We want to give everyone the opportunity to honour her memory by sharing your love for Ania and messages to her loved ones.

“Ania was very dedicated to her studies and touched the hearts of many people during her time at UWL. If you need support, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the welfare team.”

It came as Dennis Akpomedaye, 29, was charged with the murder of the student,.

Akpomedaye, from Newport, south Wales, remains in custody and is due to appear at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

A 20-year-old man who was previously arrested on suspicion of murder has been released without further action.

Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie, who is leading the investigation, said: “The victim and suspect were known to each other.

“We are examining CCTV and speaking to any witnesses who have come forward.

“However, we are always keen to hear from anyone else who has not yet spoken to us but who thinks they may have seen or heard anything, no matter how small, that could help.

“In particular we would urge anyone who lives or was travelling in the area of South Ealing Road, between 11.15pm on Monday, 16 May and 1am the next day, or anyone who has CCTV or a doorbell camera, or a dash cam, to check it for anything that appears out of the ordinary.”
