Man charged with murder in Newcastle

A man is facing a murder charge following the discovery of a body in a Newcastle home unit. (AAP)

A man has been charged with murder after the body of another man was found in a home unit in Newcastle.

Police were called to the Mayfield residence in the city's northwest around 6.30pm on Saturday after the body of a 63-year-old man was found in a bedroom.

A 35-year-old man was arrested in Argenton an hour later and taken to Waratah police station where he was charged with one count of murder.

He was refused bail and will appear by audio-visual link in Newcastle Local Court on Sunday.

Police said a post-mortem examination would be conducted on Monday.
