A man has been charged with murder, and another arrested, over the shooting death of a Newcastle woman almost six months ago.

Stacey Klimovitch, 61, was shot dead when she answered a knock at the front door of her Stockton home on June 9.

Strike Force Backhouse was set up to investigate her murder.

On Friday, detectives arrested Stuart Daniel Campbell, 29, in Newcastle and he was later charged with murder.

With assistance from the Australian Federal Police, Jason Hawkins, 46, was arrested in the ACT on Friday night.

He was taken to a local police station where a NSW warrant was issued.

Mr Campbell's case was briefly mentioned in Newcastle bail court this morning.

He didn't apply for bail and it was formally refused.

The matter was adjourned for eight weeks to allow a brief of evidence to be prepared.

In the ACT Magistrates Court, Mr Hawkins applied for bail, but the application was put off until Monday when NSW Police will seek his extradition.

Mr Hawkins told the court he knew the matter was about murder, but there wasn't a statement of facts.

"I don't understand what is happening," he said.
