Nurse found dead in Melbourne apartment, partner charged with murder

Police at the scene after the woman's body was discovered.

A 32-year-old Melbourne man charged with murdering a woman believed to be his partner has appeared in court.

Police were called to an apartment on Kooyong Road in Gardenvale around 7:30pm on Tuesday, where they discovered the body of 31-year-old nurse Cait O'Brien.

Pictures on Ms O'Brien's Facebook page indicate she had recently undergone an operation to remove a brain tumour.

Police have not revealed the cause of death.

Shea Sturt, 32, was arrested last night and nodded "yes" when Magistrate Anne Collins asked if he understood the charge against him in court today.

Magistrate Collins refused a police request for more time to gather evidence of what a prosecutor described as an "extensive" history of domestic violence.

He will remain in custody until a court hearing in October.
