Man charged with murder after woman found dead in Sydney apartment

A man has been charged with murdering his long-term partner at a unit in Sydney's south.

67-year-old Dawn Butterworth was found dead by a nurse at the Penshurst block on Monday morning.

Her partner Alan Greentree was found with suspected self-inflicted wounds when police and paramedics arrived at the Victoria Avenue address.

The 62-year-old was taken in an ambulance to St George Hospital for treatment before undergoing questioning at Kogarah Police Station.

Mr Greentree was charged with murdering his partner and was refused bail to face Sutherland Court on Tuesday.

Neighbours reported hearing screaming just before 7:00am and it is believed Ms Butterworth died hours before emergency services arrived at the scene.

The couple was well-known in the area, and it is understood that Ms Butterworth had been suffering health complications recently.

After spending most of Monday afternoon searching the property, forensic police officers were seen leaving with bags of evidence.

It is believed the couple may have had prescription drugs in their system at the time of the incident.

The ABC understands that Ms Butterworth has family interstate and that they have been informed of her death.
