Man charged with murder after Perth father dies in hospital

Charles McCarthy died in Royal Perth Hospital last week.

The charge against a man accused of a fatal assault on a Perth father of two has been upgraded to murder.

Joondanna man Andrew Doan, 34, was originally charged with causing grievous bodily harm to Charles John McCarthy.

Mr McCarthy died in Royal Perth Hospital last week after he was assaulted early on Saturday December 23, on Riverside Road in East Fremantle.

Police said Mr McCarthy was walking in the area with his wife and another man when an altercation occurred with two fishermen.

It is alleged that during the altercation Mr Doan struck Mr McCarthy on the head with an object.

Mr McCarthy was originally from Ireland, but moved to Perth in 2000.

His family flew from Ireland to be by his side while he was in hospital.

Mr Doan is due to appear in court again on January 31.
