A man has been charged with murder over the death of a retired nurse whose home “exploded” in flames.

Carole Harrison, 72, was found dead inside the burned-out house in Teddington in the early hours on August 22.

Police launched a murder investigation after uncovering evidence which suggested she may have suffered injuries before the blaze.

The mother-of-five lived alone after the death of her husband Terence, a bus driver, in 2005.

Police were called to the scene in Teddington, just before 1am on August 22 (Evening Standard)

She was described by her family as “a loving mother and caring person” who dedicated most of her life to nursing in the NHS and private care homes.

They said: “She really was a grandmother with character and will be deeply missed for her unique cheeky laugh and comical character.

"Due to the illness she suffered from, she trusted anyone that she met, sought friendship in many people and was known for being somewhat generous at times.”

William Kydd, 54, of Feltham, was due to appear at Uxbridge magistrates’ court today charged with her murder.
