A 32-year-old man has been charged with murder, after a fatal shooting in a small town in Far North Queensland yesterday afternoon.

Police said a 35-year-old man was shot in the chest at his home near Watsonville, south-west of Cairns, after an altercation with another man.

Detective Acting Inspector Anthony Law said police were called to the West Bischoff Road address at around 3:50pm after calls were made by other residents at the property.

He said officers discovered the body of the 35-year-old and took another man into custody.

"They are associates," he said.

"It will be alleged that a rifle was used as the weapon. As to the calibre of the weapon, that's still being forensically examined."

He said police are still trying to determine what occurred that led to the altercation and that investigations were ongoing.

"The crime scene, at this point in time is still being forensically examined as well," he said.

The 32-year-old man has been denied bail and is due to appear in the Mareeba Magistrate's court today.
