Accused murderer appears in court after body found in Melbourne backyard

The man accused of killing a man whose body was found in a backyard in Melbourne's south-west remains in custody after his first court appearance.

Daniel Hounslow, 41, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court this morning, charged with murdering 49-year-old Micah Kalawek.

Mr Hounslow was arrested close to the crime scene in Mount Eagle Way at Wyndham Vale about 8:50pm on Sunday night.

He was yesterday brought back to the crime scene in handcuffs by detectives, who left with bags of evidence.

He sat calmly in the dock this morning during his brief appearance in which he did not apply for bail.

His lawyer told the magistrate he had already been assessed by a nurse in custody and there were "no management issues".

A 43-year-old man who was also arrested on Sunday night has been released without charge.

Mr Hounslow is due to return to court in June.
