Man charged with murder after Airdrie woman Catherine Stewart found dead in house

A 60-year-old Airdrie man has appeared in court charged with the murder of Catherine Stewart.

The 54-year-old was found dead at a house in the Torrance Avenue area of the town at the weekend.

As reported by Lanarkshire Live earlier today, Catherine - who has now been formally identified by Police Scotland - was pronounced dead at the scene of the property after the alarm was raised at around 10.45am on Sunday.

Colin Kennedy appeared in private at Airdrie Sheriff Court earlier today, where he was charged with murder.

He made no plea or declaration and was remanded in custody ahead of an expected return to court next week.

Residents in the area have described 54-year-old Catherine as “a kind-hearted” fundraiser who beat cancer.

Police have passed on their condolences to her family.

Detective Inspector Gordon Sneddon said: "Our thoughts are very much with Catherine's family at this time.

"They have asked for their privacy to be respected, as they come to terms with their tragic loss."
