Townsville police responded to a report that two young children had gone missing. (ABC News)

A 27-year-old man has been charged over the death of a toddler in Townsville on Saturday.

At around 6:40pm, emergency services were alerted to two missing children in the suburb of Kelso.

A two-year-old was found uninjured, wandering a nearby street.

The second child, a three-year-old girl, was found in a storm drain at 8:20pm and was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police charged the man, who was known to the children, with manslaughter, endangering children by exposure and driving under the influence of a drug.

He was denied bail and will face Townsville Magistrates Court on Monday.
