A 60-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter of an 89-year-old woman in a Canberra aged care home in 2018.
Ahead of Mario Amato's brief appearance in the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday, police said the elderly woman died in hospital in December 2018.
Officers said she died a few weeks after she was allegedly assaulted by a fellow resident in a nursing home in Campbell, in Canberra's inner south.
Police said paramedics took the woman to hospital with multiple injuries, including a fractured hip joint, in mid-November.
On Wednesday, Mr Amato, a former resident of the home, appeared in court, where he was charged over the assault and pleaded not guilty to the woman's manslaughter.
A statement of facts was not tendered to the court, so no more detail is known about the case.
The charge follows a lengthy police investigation that resulted in the 60-year-old's arrest in March.
Last year Mr Amato shared his experience as a younger person in aged care, telling the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety that he was forced to move to the nursing home in his mid-50s after suffering a stroke-induced injury to his frontal lobe.
He moved out of the nursing home in February last year with the assistance of an advocate for younger people living in residential care.
Mr Amato is free on bail and is expected to be back in court in August.
