Man charged with manslaughter after 78-year-old fell 15ft from scaffolding at a store in Cribbs

A glazing boss faces charges after the death his father at Cribbs Causeway.

Garry Harbutt, 51, of Oldbury in the West Midlands, is charged with the manslaughter of 78-year-old Arthur Harbutt on March 5 last year.

As director of Night and Day Glaziers Ltd he is also charged with failing to ensure his employee’s safety.

Kate Burnham-Davies, prosecuting, told Bristol magistrates the deceased was Harbutt’s father.

She said all charges should be sent to Bristol Crown Court.

Arthur Harbutt had been working on the refurbishment of a store at the Centaurus Retail Park when he fell 15 feet between 8am and 8.30am.

Paramedics treated him at the scene before he was taken to Southmead Hospital with serious head injuries, where he died the next day.

The deceased had worked as a glazier and was thought to be fitting new window panes on a new store.

The unit was being refurbished as a new branch of leisure retailer Go Outdoors.

Police launched an investigation working closely with the Health and Safety Executive.

No pleas were indicated by the defence.

Magistrates sent the case to the crown court for a plea and case management hearing on August 6.

Harbutt was given unconditional bail.
